The Tribunal Upholds Dauda Lawal’s Victory as Governor of Zamfara State

The Zamfara State Election Petition Tribunal, convened in Sokoto, has upheld the victory of Dauda Lawal as the duly elected governor of Zamfara State. The tribunal, during its proceedings, dismissed the petition filed by Bello Matawalle, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on the grounds of lacking merit.

In its judgment, the three-member panel, presided over by Justice Cordelia Ogadi, ruled that the petitioner failed to substantiate allegations of irregularities in the collation of election results, exclusion of Maradun Local Government Area (LGA) results, and claims of uncompleted electoral processes in certain wards within the state. Furthermore, the tribunal found no evidence to support accusations of non-compliance with the Electoral Act or corrupt electoral practices by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Consequently, the tribunal imposed a fine of N500,000 on the petitioner, Bello Matawalle. The decision of the tribunal was unanimous among the panel members, which included Justice Bello Hassan and Justice Aliyu Gegele.

Solomon Akunna (SAN), the lead counsel representing Governor Dauda Lawal, expressed satisfaction with the well-considered judgment, commending the tribunal’s thorough analysis of the law.

Ishaka Dikko, the lead counsel for INEC, expressed confidence in the tribunal’s decision, highlighting that the electoral commission had conducted a credible election.

Usman Sure (SAN), the lead counsel for the petitioner, announced the intention to discuss the possibility of appealing the tribunal’s verdict with their client, emphasizing their belief that the election results did not reflect the true outcome.
