His Story – Billie HOLIDAY

Billie Holiday, who was affectionately nick-named ‘Lady Day,’ will forever be remembered not only as an iconic jazz vocalist but also as a phoenix. 1814 saw the birth of Eleanora Fagan in Philadelphia, and her early years are often described as particularly tough and deprived. Still, music was something Holiday cultivated at an early age. Soon enough, she was an active participant in the Harlem jazz scene in New York City. By the 1930s, her distinct whiny voice that had the ability to touch the emotions of many people was developing further.

Among many of her great hits one can recall “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child,” and one can understand how much profundity and courage was hiding behind an artist’s persona. Triggered by systemic racism yet another barbaric act of lynching turned into an artistic masterpiece – “Strange Fruit” which later became one of the civil rights movement’s songs. Despite addiction problems and abusive relationships, and Holiday went through everything as many people, her music was always direct and pointed or encapsulated human suffering and hope.

To this day Holiday continues to inspire many around the world. It is no coincidence that, decades later, artists from various genres turned to her works, her journalistic talent has reached them. One of the greatest period figures in jazz and american music leaves behind a legacy of an beautiful fight of societies.
