Cecil Rhodes was a British imperialist and businessman who had a considerable legacy in Southern Africa due to his actions and eventual ambitions. Born in England in 1853, as a young man, Rhodes migrated to South Africa, where he became first a diamond trader. He founded De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1888. De Beers would go on to dominate the diamond industry and this made Rhodes one of the most influential and wealthiest men of his time.
However, Rhodes was not only a businessman but a firm believer in the expansion of British imperialism. He propagated overseas expansion across the African continent, imagining a British empire ‘from Cape to Cairo’. As the Prime Minister of the cape colony, he implemented restrictive policies that disenfranchised or dispossessed the African populations. Rhodes involvement with the colonial scrape for land and resources had devastating effects on the indigenous societies, leading to permanent divisions and inequalities.
As of now, Rhodes can be considered one of the most vexed historical figures of our time. The Rhodes Scholarship, which he founded, aided in the development of education, but his vanguard role in imperialism and apartheid policy has accessed him into fierce controversy particularly in the matters of memorials and his impacts to Africa.
