Al Capone – His Story
Al Capone: America’s Most Infamous Gangster
Al Capone, known widely as “Scarface,” is one of the most infamous figures in American crime history, a name forever tied to Prohibition-era Chicago and organized crime. Born Alphonse Gabriel Capone on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Italian immigrants. Capone’s entry into the underworld began young; he joined gangs as a teenager, eventually becoming associated with New York’s notorious Five Points Gang.
In 1919, Capone moved to Chicago to work under Johnny Torrio, a mob boss who would serve as his mentor. With the onset of Prohibition in 1920, bootlegging alcohol became a booming underground business, and Capone and Torrio seized the opportunity. After an assassination attempt on Torrio in 1925, he handed over the empire to Capone, who soon became one of the wealthiest and most feared mobsters in the U.S. Capone’s organization controlled the illegal alcohol supply in Chicago, running gambling and prostitution rings as well. While he lived lavishly and was known for his generous donations to the poor, Capone’s empire thrived on violence and intimidation.
The 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre is one of the most infamous events linked to Capone’s reign. In a move to eliminate competition, Capone’s men, dressed as police officers, executed seven members of a rival gang. Though never directly tied to the massacre, it was a chilling demonstration of his influence and his willingness to use extreme measures to maintain power. This massacre shocked the nation and put pressure on law enforcement to crack down on Capone’s operations.
Capone was eventually taken down not for bootlegging, murder, or gambling, but for tax evasion. Led by Eliot Ness and the “Untouchables,” the federal government pursued Capone through his finances. In 1931, he was convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in federal prison, spending part of his time at Alcatraz. Due to his declining health from untreated syphilis, Capone was released early in 1939. He spent his last years in Florida, suffering from mental and physical health issues, until his death in 1947.
Today, Capone’s life remains a symbol of the allure and danger of organized crime. He has inspired countless movies, books, and shows, embodying both the violent and glamorous aspects of the gangster lifestyle. His story is a cautionary tale of power, crime, and the eventual consequences that follow even the most untouchable criminals.
