New NBC Code: “Competition is needed in broadcasting”

The Nigeria Broadcasting Commission, on June 11, 2020, made public an amendment to its 6th broadcasting code of conduct. Since its release, the amendment has received mixed reviews from stakeholders and industry practitioners. Africa Business Radio’s Breakfast Connect sat down with Aduratomi Bolade for his views on the updated code.
Bolade, who has been in journalism and broadcasting for almost two decades, notes that the amended code by the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission is “driving away competition” in the industry even though that might not be the regulator’s intention.
According to him, “If you’re asking those who are rights holders to willingly share the rights they paid for with people who made no moves to acquire the rights in the first place, you are not encouraging competition. Competition is needed in broadcasting if we are to get to a place where high-value content is to be created.”
