Meet Mansa Musa - His Story Deon Sowobi
Throughout the trial, the Lagos State counsel, Mrs Olufunke Adegoke, presented five witnesses, while the defendant himself testified as the sole witness in his defence. Adegoke recounted to the court that the crimes were committed between 2008 and 2017 at No. 2 Agbeke Street, near Iyana-Era Bus Stop, Ijanikin, Lagos.
In her judgment, Justice Soladoye emphasized the critical importance of the prosecution witnesses’ testimonies, which were corroborated as valid evidence and were submitted and documented alongside the convict’s admission during cross-examination that he had engaged in sexual intercourse with his two daughters. The judge expressed her dismay at the defendant’s incestuous relationship with his daughters, which began following the death of his wife in 2008.
According to Justice Soladoye, “The defendant’s incestuous relationship with his two daughters, following the death of his wife in 2008, is senseless. The survivors told this court that their biological father had been having sex with them after their mother died during childbirth when the oldest was nine years old.Â
The children were taken to their village, and even after telling their kinsmen about their father’s acts, nothing was done. They returned to Lagos, and the second child eventually reported the incident to the school after her older sister ran away from home as she could no longer endure the assault.”
The judge disclosed that the school authorities invited the Lagos State Ministry of Education and social workers, leading to the convict’s arrest, while the survivors were relocated to an orphanage. “The defendant admitted the act and stated that he was sorry. This is also in his statement, which was admitted and marked Exhibit A. He is a disgraceful father who should be locked up for life,” Justice Soladoye remarked.
As a result, Chukwuma was found guilty as charged and was sentenced to life imprisonment on each of the two counts in the charge. Furthermore, Justice Soladoye ordered that the convict’s name should be registered in the Sexual Offences Register of Lagos State. The judge commended the survivors and the school authorities for their courage in speaking up and promptly reporting the matter to the appropriate authorities.
