Olaudah Equiano 1745 – 31 March 1797), known for most of his life as Gustavus Vassa was a writer and abolitionist from, according to his memoir, the village of Essaka in modern southern Nigeria.[4][5] Enslaved as a child in Africa, he was shipped to the Caribbean and sold to a Royal Navy officer.

He was sold twice more before purchasing his freedom in 1766.

Equiano’s journey begins when he is kidnapped from his village with his sister, from whom he is eventually separated. He describes a long voyage through various African regions, marked by brief tenures as a slave to “a chieftain, in a very pleasant country” and a wealthy widow who resides in “a town called Tinmah, in the most beautiful country I had yet seen in Africa”

“This documentary contains material sourced from various creators and organizations for the purpose of enhancing the storytelling and educational value of the program. While specific credits have been omitted for artistic and privacy reasons, we deeply appreciate the contributions of these creators.”
